Lawn Care & Maintenance Services

Each service can be included in a comprehensive maintenance package or requested individually based on your property's needs.

Mowing & Edging

Weekly mowing during the active growing season (April through November) at the optimal height for your turf type. Sharp blades, consistent cut patterns, and clean string-trim edges along beds, walkways, and driveways. Clippings are mulch-mowed to return nutrients to the soil unless bagging is requested.

Fertilization & Weed Control

Multi-round fertilization programs calibrated for Michigan's cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue). Pre-emergent applications in early spring prevent crabgrass. Post-emergent treatments target broadleaf weeds. Fall fertilization builds root density for winter survival and early spring green-up.

Shrub trimming in progress

Shrub & Hedge Trimming

Scheduled pruning for shrubs, hedges, ornamental grasses, and perennials. Timing is matched to each species' growth cycle. Spring-blooming shrubs are pruned after flowering; summer-bloomers are pruned in late winter. Ornamental grasses are cut back in early spring before new growth emerges.

Fresh mulch installation

Mulching & Bed Maintenance

Annual mulch refresh (typically 2 to 3 inches of hardwood, cedar, or dyed mulch) to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and maintain a clean appearance. Bed edging is re-cut each spring to define crisp borders between turf and planting areas.

Fall leaf cleanup

Seasonal Cleanups

Spring cleanup includes debris removal, bed clearing, first mow, and mulch application. Fall cleanup includes leaf removal, final mow, perennial cutback, and winterization of irrigation systems if applicable. Both transitions are critical to lawn health and curb appeal.

Aeration & Overseeding

Core aeration in early fall relieves soil compaction and allows water, air, and nutrients to reach the root zone. Overseeding immediately after aeration introduces improved turf varieties that thicken the lawn, crowd out weeds, and improve disease resistance.

Seasonal Lawn Care Schedule for Metro Detroit

Southeast Michigan's climate dictates specific timing for every lawn care task. Here is how we structure maintenance throughout the year.

Spring (April - May)

Spring cleanup begins as soon as the ground firms and daytime temperatures consistently reach the 50s. Pre-emergent crabgrass preventer is applied when soil temperatures reach 55 degrees (typically mid-April in Metro Detroit). First mow occurs when turf reaches 3.5 to 4 inches. Beds are edged, cleaned, and mulched. Early spring is also the time for shrub pruning on summer-blooming varieties and ornamental grass cutback.

Summer (June - August)

Weekly mowing continues at 3 to 3.5 inches (taller during heat and drought stress). Post-emergent broadleaf weed treatments are applied as needed. Shrubs receive their second trim if growth warrants it. Irrigation monitoring prevents both overwatering and drought damage. Mid-summer is the lowest-intervention period for cool-season lawns, as growth naturally slows during the hottest weeks.

Fall (September - November)

Fall is the most important season for cool-season lawn health. Core aeration and overseeding occur in September while soil temperatures are still warm enough for seed germination. Fall fertilization (typically two applications) builds the root reserves that fuel spring green-up. Leaf removal prevents smothering and disease. Final mow height is lowered gradually to 2.5 inches to reduce snow mold risk.

Winter (December - March)

Active lawn care pauses during winter dormancy. However, this is the planning period: reviewing the previous season's performance, adjusting the fertilization program, scheduling any renovation work (grading, drainage, sod replacement) for spring, and locking in contracts for the coming season. Properties with our snow management service receive continuous winter attention.

Lawn Care & Maintenance FAQ

Answers to the questions Metro Detroit homeowners ask most about professional lawn maintenance.

During the active growing season (mid-April through mid-November), cool-season lawns in Metro Detroit should be mowed weekly. Growth rates peak in spring and fall when temperatures are between 60 and 75 degrees. During the summer heat (July and August), growth slows and mowing frequency may drop to every 10 days, though we maintain weekly visits for edging, trimming, and property inspection. The goal is to never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing.

For the cool-season grass species common in Metro Detroit (Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue), the ideal mowing height is 3 to 3.5 inches during the growing season. This height promotes deep root development, shades the soil to reduce weed germination, and improves drought tolerance. We lower the cut gradually to 2.5 inches for the final fall mowing to reduce the risk of snow mold, a fungal disease that thrives under matted, tall grass beneath snow cover.

A standard program for Metro Detroit lawns includes four to six applications per season: one or two in spring (including pre-emergent crabgrass control), one in early summer, and two in fall. The fall applications are the most important because they fuel root growth during the cool autumn weeks and store energy for early spring green-up. We use soil test results to customize the nutrient ratios for your specific property rather than applying a one-size-fits-all blend.

Early fall, typically the first two weeks of September in Metro Detroit. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for seed germination (if overseeding is combined with aeration), but the cooler air temperatures reduce stress on the turf. Spring aeration is a secondary option but must be done carefully to avoid disrupting pre-emergent herbicide barriers. We strongly recommend fall aeration for most properties because the recovery period is faster and the results are more pronounced.

We offer both. Full-season maintenance contracts provide the most consistent results and the best value, as your lawn receives every service at the optimal time throughout the year. However, we also provide one-time services such as spring cleanup, fall cleanup, mulch installation, aeration, and overseeding for homeowners who handle their own weekly mowing but need help with specific seasonal tasks.
